doortotomorrow replied to your post: As a Beatles fan and a Christopher Eccleston fan, do you think he portrayed Lennon in the right way?
Okay, I just naturally assumed that you have seen it. If you ever…
Although I don’t know very much about John Lennon and the Beatles I felt that it was thoroughly researched and done with a lot of respect for John and the complexity of his personality. At a screening and Q&A I attended, Chris said something along the lines of having watched many interviews of John Lennon and that the man came across as full of conflicts: humble and arrogant and gentle and aggressive and full of himself and self-deprecating… I felt that this came through very much in the film. The writer, who was also present, had also obviously pored through interview archives to put his scenario together, so it seemed well-researched to me. Basically, I was even more convinced after I heard that these people had to say about the film they’d just made, their intent came through very well on film.
BUT. If you’re looking for a happy story, this is not it. John is shown in his most vulnerable, unpleasant and bizarre moments, as this was a difficult period of his life. It worked for me and I enjoyed it, but many fan reviews I read were all “omg he wasn’t this dark!!!”. And perhaps he wasn’t all the time, but I am willing to believe he could have gone through the bad patch portrayed in this film.
Oh yes, you will probably want to find an uncut version when you finally watch it. You know, so as not to miss the… best “bits”. ;-p
